AGENDA
Setting the stage The COVID-19 pandemic, a volatile economy, and a sense of isolation took its toll, with research showing that depression is high and people’s sense of security is low. From a leadership or management perspective, “we were dealing with things we haven’t had to deal with before,” says Ada Guan, CEO and co-founder of Rich Data Co. To combat some of the hardships the business and the individual were facing, they homed in on inclusion and connecting what the team did as individuals to a greater purpose. They participated in “Steptember” for the whole team to tracked steps in September and donated to a charity for Cerebral Palsy, and for every COVID-19 vaccine an employee got they donated to UNICEF to cover vaccines for people in remote countries. “We focused on team spirit and connection, because operating cohesively as a team was not easy during this time, and for us having a shared purpose is very important,” says Guan, an Excellence Award Winner in the Australian HR Champion (CEO) of the Year category. “People felt cared for and like we were getting through as a team and not just as individuals.” For Sarah Churchill, General Manager - People and Clinical at CareFlight, the key challenge over the last few years has been first and foremost ensuring their essential services continued to operate throughout the pandemic. “Navigating the ever-changing covid restrictions and ensuring the wellbeing of our team has been challenging for the HR team and organisation,” says Churchill, Excellence Award Winner in the Australian HR Director of the Year Category. “The past two years has been grueling for all, and particularly the healthcare sector.” Back to black tie The annual awards showcase on a national stage the country’s most outstanding HR teams, leaders, and employers for their strategies, achievements, and programs over the past year and the 2022 crop did not disappoint. After two years of virtual gatherings, the HR profession’s best and brightest were finally able to raise a glass to each other at the black-tie gala. Churchill says it was amazing to be back at an in-person event after so long, and “the atmosphere was one of excitement as HR professionals united to celebrate their enormous contributions to their organisations, and the industry, following a gruelling few years of continuous change, challenge, and accomplishment.” The hardships elevated her win in her eyes, and she’s honoured and grateful to have been named amongst her top-tier peers. “To be recognised for my dedication, warmth and empathy is truly special,” Churchill adds. As a 60-person company, Rich Data Co doesn’t have the resources of the big guns and for her too the win meant something extra special in that context. “It's fantastic to be recognized by the industry on what we do, especially in the talent space because we always say people are our most important asset,” she says. “As CEO, I'm very proud of what the team has achieved.” Facing the future Looking ahead, there’s more trouble on the horizon – Guan says her sense is “we all need to hold on tight and let's go, because it’s going to be a wild ride for many organizations and for many people” – but the HR industry is nothing if not agile, resilient, and perhaps most importantly, hopeful. Facing rising interest rates, inflation, continued COVID impact, widespread global unrest, and what will likely be a fierce competition for talent in a volatile market, Guan says the goal going forward is to continue to support her team while pushing out the company’s strong growth agenda, noting that she’s “cautiously optimistic,” with the expansion into the North American market a point of excitement and something to look forward to at Rich Data Co. “Strong organizations and strong people, team will get through this and will become stronger, so this is an opportunity. It's just not going to be easy. Another storm is here – but once again we will navigate through it.”
FLEXIBLE WORK, technology advances, remote culture, global talent pools – at its core, it was a continuous reel of challenges and opportunities that defined the HR landscape over the last 12 months and as always, Human Resources Director was charting the course alongside HR professionals every step of the way. At this year’s Australian HR Awards, it was time to celebrate the accomplishments and wins along the winding road of the past year.
Despite ongoing rockiness in the world at large, Australian HR professionals united to celebrate the ultimate triumph of the industry over the hardships of the last year

Winners Those selected as Excellence Awardees had their nomination submissions forwarded to an independent judging panel, who then score each submission according to the criteria, using a simple points system. Scores are then aggregated to produce a single winner in each category. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Friday, 9 September at the Fullerton Hotel Sydney, and then published online.
Excellence Awardee Selected Nominations were then reviewed and shortlisted to identify the Excellence Awardees, which were announced in June 2022. Excellence awardees were notified via email and announced online.
