The ADP Canada Award for Rising Star of the Year
AFTER TWO YEARS of virtual nods, the return of the in-person celebration was just as much a defining feature of this year’s Canadian HR Awards as was the impressive display of the sector’s excellence over the last 12 months. Showcasing the crowning achievements, strong leadership, and enviable innovation of HR’s best, brightest, and boldest, the event recognized individuals and teams in 20 prestigious categories – and it was quite the night, to put it mildly. Celebrating the best, brightest, and boldest “You can just feel the energy here tonight,” said Brigid Pelino, senior vice president and chief people and culture officer at Definity Financial, who spoke to HRD at the awards.

Commemorative Guide
The first stage of the process is the call for nominations, which was open to all HR professionals, teams, companies, and organizations – including HR service providers – from across Canada from April 11 – June 3, 2022. The Canadian HR Awards team then conducted research and drew on knowledge and information gained through HRD Canada and Canadian HR Reporter to verify and support nominations received. The Excellence Awardees for each category (except the Lifetime Achievement category) were determined from that information and those selected were notified. The Excellence Awardees were officially announced in July, after which all submissions were forwarded to the independent judging panel comprised of industry leaders and senior representatives. The panel assessed and voted for winners in each category according to the relevant category criteria. Finally, a simple points system was used to aggregate judges' votes, with the Excellence Awardee with the top score in a category named the winner. The winners were announced at the awards show on Sept. 15.
Excellence Awardees Once all nominations were considered and research was complete, excellence awardess were selected in each category (except the Lifetime Achievement category) and notified via e-mail or phone. Excellence awardees were officially announced in July 2022 on this website and promoted in magazine and online channels.
Judging All excellence awardee submissions were forwarded to the independent judging panel comprising esteemed experts, though leaders and veterans in and around the HR profession. The panel assessed and voted for their winners in each category according to the relevant category criteria. Voting commenced last August 2022 and their judgment were impartial, balanced, incisive and fair. Any judge with conflict of interest in a category reclused themselves from judging that category.

“The amount of screaming and yelling is because people are just so thrilled to be together again,” Pelino, who received the HRPA Award for Woman of Distinction, added. “And it makes it so much more special, frankly, to win an award in this environment. It just feels really good to be together again.” Over a tumultuous few years, it became increasingly clear why HR centric strategies are the key to organizational excellence. And although the industry weathered a variety of challenges – both new and recurring – over the last 12 months, when the doors opened at the Liberty Grand in Toronto the atmosphere amongst the nearly 1,000 attendees was one of celebration. Winners took the stage to vibrant applause and cherished the opportunity to raise a glass on-site to each other’s successes – wins which didn’t always come easy in the current climate. Frank Monteleone, Rexall, Senior Vice President HR, took home Canadian HR Team of the Year (Retail/Hospitality) for the second year in a row and said the award meant a lot in light of the work his team has done for the business over a challenging couple of years. “Getting this external recognition – and in-person this time – is exciting,” Monteleone says. “The last two years have been an incredible journey for this team.” Winner of the Canadian HR Team of the Year (Fewer Than 500 Employees) award, Chief People Officer at Igloo Software Kristen Ruttgaizer said her team’s commitment to each other was the differentiator that saw them thrive during a time of change. “There’s been so much growth, but I’m most proud of how we’ve all stuck together – we believe in each other and respect each other,” Ruttgaizer says. “We’re committed to really seeing our employees really prosper in the company.” Mary-Anne Cedrone, senior manager of communications at AstraZeneca and winner of both the Lifeworks Award for Excellence in Financial, Physical & Mental Wellness and the Venngo Award for Best Workplace Culture, agreed wholeheartedly. Her pride in AstraZeneca’s employees and the organization as a whole was evident, noting “the foundation of our business is our people.” “I know that sounds cliché, but it’s true. At AstraZeneca, we’re at our best when our people are at theirs.” Adapt, evolve, overcome Though the format and medium of the celebration has changed over the nine years it’s been running, the indominable spirit of the awards is steadfast – and the HR industry is nothing if not adaptable, a truth that’s been proven time and time again over the course of the unprecedented global pandemic. Perhaps Sanita Alias, vice president of people, culture and brand at the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) and recipient of The Leadership Agency Award for HR Leader of the Year, summed it up best when she pointed out it’s not just about a person’s job title, seniority level, or years of experience. “A great HR leader is someone who can demonstrate and prove that they continuously put people first,” Alias says. “And instil values, mission, and opportunity for growth in their people.” HR professionals across the board step up in their organizations, adapt to ever-shifting industry conditions, and ultimately overcome the challenges that come their way – sometimes against all odds. There’s no shortage of grit in the sector, and that’s what the awards celebrate year after year. Congratulations to this year’s crop of winners!

As ever, though, HR has shown remarkable resilience and these awards offer a true snapshot of the best and brightest professionals. This year, 24 prestigious categories celebrated and recognized excellence in the profession, focusing on the achievements of the best individuals, teams and employers. Back in person after two years of virtual shows, it was fantastic to see such strong support for these annual awards, and we would like to thank everyone who submitted a nomination and acknowledge our esteemed panel of judges for lending their time and expertise to the endeavour. The Canadian HR Awards is brought to you by Key Media, the organizers of the HR Leaders Summit, HR Tech Summit, Australian HR Awards and HRD Awards Asia, and publishers of the leading global HR source, HRD, and Canadian HR Reporter.
