With the impacts of a global pandemic, followed swiftly by dramatic rises in the cost of living in a time of continued economic uncertainty, the last three years have taken a toll on Kiwi workers. Research shows that burnout is high among people who are feeling the financial pressure. For HR, this has presented a lot of challenges. But with challenge comes opportunity, and for the winners of the 2023 HRD Awards, that opportunity is found in their people. The hotly anticipated event recognised the efforts of the most innovative leaders and teams across Aotearoa’s HR industry over the last year as the talent squeeze gripped the nation.

Nominations Nominations were opened for submission via the online portal. The awards were free to enter. Individuals and companies were able to nominate themselves or their peers in unlimited categories. Submissions focused on HR programs and achievements over the last 12 months.
Confirmation of Excellence Awardees Once the research was completed, Excellence Awardees were selected in each category and notified via email. Excellence Awardees were also announced on the HRD NZ website on 20 February.
Judging The Insurance Business Awards team will send completed excellence awardee submissions to an independent panel of judges, comprising insurance industry leaders and senior representatives. Judges will be well known and well respected within the industry and their judgment will be impartial, balanced, incisive and fair. Any judge with a conflict of interest in a particular category will recuse themselves from judging that category. Judges will review the excellence awardee submissions and allocate a score for each excellence awardee. The excellence awardee with the highest score in each category once the judging process has been completed will be named the winner.
Judging An independent panel of judges appointed by HRD and comprised of HR leaders from around New Zealand reviewed the submissions and allocated each Excellence Awardee a confidential and impartial score.

Awards host and summit chair Stephanie Love of Love HR said, “It was a great honour to host the HR Awards New Zealand this year, and to be amongst such inspirational leaders. “I know many of the attendees thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect in person again, and I always enjoy any opportunity to facilitate people coming together to learn, collaborate and connect. Some of the best inspiration gets sparked when we come together.” Putting people at the core of what you do Among the winners, who were named across six categories, was Ceri Rowland, general manager of people and culture at Douglas Pharmaceuticals, whose team won HR Team of the Year. “Our whole team is jumping for joy. We’re just thrilled!” she told HRD upon winning the award. “It’s really lovely to be acknowledged for all the hard work and the passion and the drive that this team shows every single day to make a positive impact.” The company puts people at the core of what it does every single day, Rowland said. “The entire philosophy of our team, our people and our culture is that happy, healthy people deliver sustainable high performance,” she said. “Whether it’s wellbeing initiatives, benefits or remuneration, or even the way in which we approach performance and employment relations issues, we really do put people first, and that ultimately leads to great commercial outcomes for us as well.” But most important in HR is continuing to put your people front and centre. “I don’t think there’s one silver bullet, but I think if we put people at the core of what we do, we will win every time,” Rowland said. ‘It’s about talking to your people’ Holly Gibson, winner of the HR Manager of the Year award, said the general shift to people experience and EX design had been incredible after she applied her learnings from a recently completed EX-design course at one branch of Assurity Consulting. “The way that I learned was very much about learning about people and putting people at the centre,” she said. “The idea is that the answers to the problems that you have generally lie with the people you’re supporting because they know.” The company collaborated with staff at the branch, and listened, co-designed, worked with and trusted their people to come up with a better way of doing things. When the branch grew by 12 people and added half a million dollars to its bottom line, the program was rolled out nationally. “It took us a little while to get a new design, but the new design was what they designed themselves, and it cost us nothing to do. And the transformation in the branch, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Gibson said. “It’s about not having all the answers but actually talking to your people to understand what they need and designing with them, and I’ve just been recognised for that, which I can’t believe. It’s pretty surprising and amazing.” Creating a culture of inclusion and high performance Putting people first wasn’t an idea exclusive to the award winners, as it was echoed throughout the award submissions from Excellence Awardees. Excellence Award winner Heather Polglase, Spark’s CPO, said, “Spark’s success relies on our talented and diverse team of people and our culture of inclusion and high performance. We want to create a culture where our people lean into challenges, champion the customer, continuously grow, and adapt at pace. “We want our people to feel they can bring their whole selves to work, that they have opportunities to grow and develop, and that they are connected to our purpose – to help all of New Zealand win big in a digital world.” Author-it’s chief people experience officer, Elizabeth O’Brien, said, “Throughout a year of change, we have persevered through the wellbeing challenges that COVID's arrival in New Zealand created; we have continued to build up our team’s capabilities both locally and offshore and have started to infuse our leaders with the mindsets they need to create an exceptional employment experience for our people.” HR Summit looks at future of HR HRD's National HR Summit added a real sense of community to the awards ceremony, bringing together some of the biggest names in New Zealand’s HR industry to discuss the challenges and opportunities it faces right now. Flexibility is key to the future of HR – and this is not just about flexible working. Award winners agree that there isn’t a place for a cookie-cutter approach in the future of the profession. Rowland said, “We get very caught up in knowing what we should do in every scenario and having one rule for different scenarios. If you look at some of the questions that have come up [at the HR Summit], what happens when this happens, what should we do, what’s the right approach to this – if we can challenge ourselves to look at everyone and every situation in its own context and respond to that, I think we would be much better human resources and people and culture practitioners overall.” One area that Gibson believes could do with a lot more flexibility is the performance review. “Throw away your performance reviews,” she said. “They’re not designed for people, and they’re not designed for high performance. If you really want your people to be high-performance, give them meaningful work, speak with them regularly, recognise them, pay them fairly – but this idea of a performance review, particularly an annual one, it just needs to go on the bench.” Workforce wellbeing was also a trending topic throughout the summit: Lucy Hone, director at the NZ Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience, shared her findings on leading with resilience, and Anna Luimaihetau Darling, general manager – people experience at Sharesies, explained how her organisation applies the principles of te whare tapa whā to its wellbeing strategy.
Research The HRD Awards team conducted due diligence, drawing on research and editorial insights to verify the information submitted in the nominations.
